A historical novel - more time spent on history of Spain prior and after Bonaparte than the art of Goya or his training, mediums, etc. The time spend on the artist in the novel is mainly on his personal life with women and his relationship with political friends. If you like history - read it! Else stay away.

The book is mostly about the politics in Spain throughout Goya's lifetime.While insight into the painters life is highly entertaining, I can't help but question the validity of the details and conversations.
