Organic Chemistry

Professor Tom Bond, University of California at San Diego

This is an exceptional text, one of the best I have ever read. The text is
both thorough and very well written. Biological examples are incorporated
throughout and give good incentive for understanding the topics.

An alright book for learning Organic Chemistry. I think it focuses too much on learning exacting numbers than learning the concepts in detail. For example, the book provides you a ton of pkas while you really just need to know the general pkas of common molecules. You don’t need to know exacting pka/electronegativety of a ketone with one halide vs two halides. The concept is two halides are very electronegative and pull e density. You don’t need exacting values and the book does this very often.
The book provides an introduction into key concepts such as thermodynamics, acid base chemistry, Molecular Orbitals, stereochem, which govern all chemical rxns (this is what profs mean when they say understand) However, these concepts were not applied to most rxns leaving you to try to understand these difficult concepts (especially proving the pka for every rxn so you can see why this rxn is favorable) and (conservation of orbital symmetry isn’t really discussed but is very important)

An well-written, clear, and thorough introduction to many topics in organic chemistry. Verbose, but its long-winded explanations have merit.
