The Bali Aga are a large ethnic minority of indigenous people that live in the central highlands of Bali. In this ethnographic study, Reuter (a research fellow at the U. of Melbourne) examines their elaborate alliance systems and their marginalization in the larger Balinese society. He concludes by proposing an intersubjective and communicative model of human interaction as the foundation for understanding the relative significance of cooperation and competition in the cultural production of knowledge.
