Every night, when a plant has reached full bloom, a Flower Fairy is born. Now for every girl who ever wondered about the Flower Fairies-or imagined what it might be like to be one-here are two little books about two special fairies. Perfect for introducing the youngest readers and listeners to the magical world created by Cicely Mary Barker.
Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings. As a child she was influenced by the works of the illustrator Kate Greenaway, whom she assiduously copied in her formative years. Her principal influence, however, was the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites.
I am a big fan of Cicely Mary Barker's flower fairy illustrations. To get this new book, Frederick Warne has put a variety of Barker's illustrations together in different ways. The story is a bit forced and extremely forgettable, but as an artifact this is a beautiful book, with a buttercup yellow die-cut cover, and Barker's illustrations throughout.
