The Northern Nadars of Tamil Nadu: An Indian Caste in the Process of Change

The Nadars are a low Indian caste, in terms of status, power, and wealth. This work analyzes the upward mobility of the Northern Nadars of Tamil Nadu within the caste hierarchy. The author studies two types of changes--caste mobility and social evolution--thereby challenging the notion of the
caste system being a rigid order.
