Your Inner Eve: Discovering God's Woman Within

Rate this book
In the refreshingly candid Oh God!, the Reverend Dr. Susan Newman–a United Church of Christ minister and senior adviser for religious affairs to the mayor of Washington, D.C.–showed African American women of faith how to reconcile their spiritual and sexual selves. Now, in this empowering new book, written with her accessible blend of comforting straight talk and down-to-earth humor, Dr. Newman encourages you to discover your “Inner Eve”–the “original you” that embodies the feminine expression of God’s Spirit. This Inner Eve is the keeper of self-esteem, intuition, and creative nature. She is your best self, your champion, your protector. She is not afraid, she is not ashamed; she is strong and vital to your well-being.

As Dr. Newman reveals, negative feelings such as emptiness, self-doubt, and self-hatred can be overcome by nurturing and strengthening your Inner Eve. An awakened Inner Eve inspires women to take action, improve their lives, and find their voice. Emboldened by the Inner Eve, women can see how their gifts can change their life–and the world around them.

Your Inner Eve by The Reverend Dr. Susan Newman explores the woman you're supposed to be. She (Inner Eve-original woman Eve) is inside every woman just waiting for you to let her shine. "She is our best self, our champion, our intuition, our creative nature...When we were young and innocent, Eve was strong."
The book talks about how many women have "lost touch" with their inner Eve and so it has affected who they are, their sense of value and worth. Each section ends with an "Inward Reflection" exercise and a "Susanism." My favorite Susanism is "Start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can."
It took me a month to read this book. (My time manufacturing machine was down I guess.) But I finally finished and the last section was about making time to just "be." Women are so busy doing for others they don't take care of themselves. That's me all over. That's what took me so long to read it. I wasn't doing for me.
Newman has a conversational writing style that's easy to relate to. It is actually a quick read. (My more Eve-empowered sister read it in a day.) The author's take on familiar biblical stories is both thought-provoking and humorous. I recommend this book to all women who are ready to embrace who they once were and who they are meant to be. I say again, the reader must be ready to hear and internalize the message in order to benefit from reading it.

A friend told me about a lecture series in our town, and I managed to fit the first one in when Dr Susan Newman spoke. Her lecture engaged me so much, I wanted to learn more from this educated and wonderful woman.

It is no wonder that Ebony and Essence magazines are all over this Reverend. Mixing humour with biblical truths in a way that helps a person relate the stories to their own lives, Newman encourages women everywhere to discover their Inner Eve.

My Inner Eve plays hide and go seek through the pages of this 118 page book. I caught glimpses of her, who she wanted to be, while reading.

Newman suggests that we all have the perfect woman that Eve was when first God formed her from Adam. We just need to coax her out of hiding. Just as Eve hid from the Lord after sinning, our own Inner Eve hides from fear of punishment, ridicule, self doubt, and far too many other things than one can count.

There is no reason why our Inner Eve cannot escape that we bind her with.

I recommend this book to women of all race and faith. Men, read this and help your wives find their own Inner Eve.

If you ever get a chance to see the author speak, take full advantage of it!
