this is a somewhat brief biographical work interspersed with over 60 of Van Gogh's paintings. the writing bit wasn't the best; the author seemed to skip around quite a lot, and many of the paintings referenced weren't even included in the book. there's an index of the works, but it's not alphabetical, and so difficult to use. Van Gogh's work itself is absorbing: not exactly aesthetically pleasing, but undeniably good. his paintings have a decided ochre domination, yellow fields, yellow skies, yellow subtle and unsubtle. it seems fitting that he supposedly shot himself in one of his yellow fields. his hands and skies are beautiful. my personal favorites of this collection were Starry Night over the Rhone, L'Arlésienne: Madame Ginoux ,and Café at Night.
