Selkies or ‘seal folk’ are mythical creatures that can appear wherever seals congregate. During the day, they are practically indistinguishable from regular seals, but at night they peel out of their pelts, revealing their beautiful human forms. Without their pelt, a selkie cannot return to the sea. If a selkie pelt is stolen by a human, the selkie will be wed and subservient to them until the pelt is retrieved.The seas rise when the Moon is overhead because they wish to return to her. Selkies, bound to the seas, are of the same mind. When a selkie returns to the sea for the last time, they will make a great leap and fly to the Moon’s open arms as a small shooting star. Living, selkies return to the sea; in death, they return to the Moon, who governs the seas.Throughout time, selkies have been all but neglected by literature.
