Join Little Nye and his friends in a picture book celebrating imaginative play in simple stories and fresh illustrations with a fun, retro feel.
When Lester rolls a lump of snow around the yard, it grows bigger and bigger, but what is it? It’s too big to throw, and with the help of Nella, Gracie, and Little Nye, it’s now as big as Lester himself. Why, it’s just the right size for a snow friend! All that’s needed are a few finishing touches to make him come to life. And all the friends need is some cocoa and sugar buns to warm them up after!
Lerryn korda has a BA in film from New York University and an MA in illustration from Kingston Universty. The Playtime with Little Nye series are her first children's books and are published by Walker Books. She is a mother of two and lives in London.
In this sweet story for young toddlers and preschoolers, four friends go out to play in the snow and discover the joy of building a simple snowman. “It’s snowed all morning. Everyone’s excited. Nella pulls Gracie and Little Nye on the sled. Lester is rolling a lump of snow.” As Lester, a cute little animal bundled in his wooly hat, long yellow coat and red scarf, rolls his lump of snow bigger and bigger, his friends gather round to ask what it is. Lester proudly declares that the snow lump is Osbert, his snow friend. And so the group happily helps decorate Osbert with eyes, mouth, arms, and warm clothes. The bright illustrations in gauche and digital collage follow the action clearly. Korda balances the bright white snow with a soft palette of colors. While the animals are not identifiable as particular species, they are drawn in an appealing way, reminiscent of Miffy. Millions of Snow is part of a series “Playtime with Little Nye”, by Lerryn Korda, a British illustrator. Other books in the series include Into the wild (Candlewick, 2010), It’s vacation time (2010), and Rocket to the moon (2010).
