Je moet wel bereid zijn het langzame tempo en de gedragen taal van de negentiende eeuw te lezen, maar dan vind je hierin een boeiende roman over een rijke koopmansdochter die zelf een weg door het leven zoekt en daarbij op de grenzen van de conventies van de maatschappij stuit.
