Misericorde: A novel of two tales

Rate this book
This is a novel of two tales. Both are of the High Middle Ages, but the characters and moments they describe stand a century apart. One story is set in Italy and the other on the Rhine. One is a conversation and the other an adventure. And yet, they belong together and need to be told together. Evan Bruce Wilson retells the tales from the "Journal of Alexander Crivello" (in which nine Venetian nobles discuss Antony of Jerusalem's poem "The Lady of the High Towers") and Theodulf the Frank's "The Sorrows of Drummen", (in which Sir Georgius of Outremer and Hardratta of Stavanger, the Merciless, meet to rescue Lady Iolanthe). These stories stood in their day to battle the fashionable medieval doctrine of Courtly Love. Perhaps this telling is a few centuries late. Perhaps the battle should be considered over. Perhaps not.
