This popular book of 50 strategies for enhancing social studies learning in K-8 classrooms offers valuable ideas and applications for pre-service and practicing teachers alike. Always appreciated for its connections between theory, research, and practice, and the extensions provided through web sites and references, this new edition enhances those strengths by providing assessment ideas and website resources for every strategy. Eight conceptually-organized overarching strategies to facilitate organizing a social studies classroom precede forty-two social-studies specific strategies —organized alphabetically and introduced by grade level and National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) standards indicators. This handy resource provides models, examples, and assessments from real teachers and students, so that pre-service teachers may be successful in their student teaching and field experiences and first years in the classroom and practicing teachers may freshen their social studies teaching with some new ideas.
this book is a required textbook for our class. It has 50 social studies strategies for k-8 classrooms. Our professor had us choose a strategy and do a presentation to the class we came away with a wealth of information to use to teach future lessons. I choose mock trail and set up a trail for a lawsuit between humpty dumpty and the King because he fell off the wall. We integrated the branches of government, citizenship, reading, arts, music into the lesson. It was presented as powerpoint presentation to the class. There are so many wonderful strategies for teacher and even parents could use some of these .Great book a keeper.
I love how easily this book is to read! Each of the 50 social studies strategies is only a couple of pages and includes assessment ideas! One of the few textbooks that I will keep from undergrad. Great reference to make social studies interesting and engaging-- Story Paths, Video Production, Cemetery Studies, and SO much more!
