About the author

Bodmer wurde am 19.7.1698 in Greifensee bei Zürich geboren. Nach seinem Studium der Theologie und einer Ausbildung zum Kaufmann war er von 1725 bis 1775 Professor für helvetische Geschichte und Politik am Gymnasium Zürich, ab 1737 zudem Mitglied des Großen Rats der Stadt. Gemeinsam mit seinem Freund Johann Jakob Breitinger vertrat Bodmer eine Ästhetik, die - in deutlicher Gegenposition zu Johann Christoph Gottsched - auf der schöpferischen Phantasie des Künstlers und auf der Darstellung des Wunderbaren fußt. Als Neuentdecker der mittelhochdeutschen Dichtung sowie als Übersetzer Homers und Miltons ist Bodmer bedeutsam. Am 2. Januar 1783 starb er auf Gut Schönenberg nahe Zürich.
