I'd been saving this book as it was the only Carol Marinelli medical romance (of 55) which I hadn't read. I'm not interested in her billionaire(46)/sheikh/desert princess(16)/prince(5) books, which are mostly what she currently writes. I've read a few of these books, with their virginal heroines, but they don't appeal. I like novels to be at least vaguely believable (I'm not into fantasy or the supernatural) and, lets face it, in real life most billionaires are either workaholic/ruthless/demanding/promiscuous/screwed up or a combination of the above: not the sort of man I find appealing. Given that Accidental Reunion was only her 6th novel, it's pretty good.
23 year old flight attendant Lila Bailey & 5th year medical student Declan Haversham were in love 8 years ago, when her mother Elizabeth was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Lila declared that she would never put her mother in a home & was going to train to be a nurse so that she could care for her. When Declan laughed at the idea of impulsive, scatty Lila, who hated the sight of blood, becoming a nurse, she took offence & ended their 2 year relationship. Neither of them has got over the pain &, deep down, they still love each other.
Declan has now turned up as the new ED registrar in the hospital where Lila works. He's worked in Chicago, London & Scotland for some years. Yvonne, a Scottish geriatrician, has moved to Melbourne with him & they are house-sharing. In the last chapter Declan makes some mean comments about Yvonne which show him in a poor light.
This is a sad & touching story. Lila has made a martyr of herself where her mother is concerned. She works full-time & shares her mother's care with her aunt Shirley, leaving no time for herself. She hasn't even applied for home help. Shirley's health is also beginning to suffer. Elizabeth is now non-verbal, non-mobile & no longer recognises anyone. I've worked in a dementia unit & know how difficult the illness can be. There comes a time when a care facility is the best option.
