A compelling handbook for cancer patients, their families, and friends. Four long-term survivors, with more than 70 years of collective experience dealing with cancer, have put together a guidebook to help others who face this illness. The authors combine personal stories and experiences with practical tips for coping with side effects, information on tests and procedures, emotional and spiritual encouragement, and advice on how to let others help during this difficult time. "This book is many a pragmatic and practical handbook on dealing with the details of cancer treatment; a book with helpful and inspirational vignettes; and most of all, a story of friends...each exemplifies a depth of resourcefulness and optimism that has sustained them through the roughest of times." P. Kelly Marcom, MD Director, Breast Medical Oncology and Hereditary Cancer Clinic Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center
Despite the title, I found this book very depressing. All of the "our stories" at the beginning recount numerous recurrences, and while that may be said to advise readers that these authors have been through it, it certainly didn't make me hopeful--even at 3+ years post-cancer. I do realize that many advances have been made since these women were diagnosed, but I have found other books that were more encouraging.
This is an ideal gift for anyone who needs to care for someone they love, who has cancer. A practical guide by Nancy, Pam, Susan and Terri, who tell a story of individual journeys and friendships developed on road to recovery. This book was a gift from Duke Cancer Patient Support Program...to help you and family cope with the impact of cancer on your lives.
They take the reader through the journey with grace, kindness, prayer, and loving advice. An Appendix lists practical things you can do to help those diagnosed with cancer/brain tumors. A must Read!
