Mary E. Wilkins Freeman was a chronicler of rural 19th century New England women's lives. Like so many of the other "local color" authors, her metier is the short story, and this is a collection of a baker's dozen of them that were either meant for children or feature children. I happened upon a lovely, well-preserved copy at a price I couldn't say no to. The stories aren't connected to each other in any way, and since some of them were a little too sweet for my taste, I found that it worked best to read one at a time over the course of several weeks, and it proved to be an effectively soothing bedtime book for troubling times. I copied the blurb from the jacket flap into the book description for the goodreads entry, to give any curious goodreader the flavor of the book, since I'm certainly not inclined to write about each story at length. My favorite was "A Parsnip Stew," which was notably more acerbic than the others, and perhaps not coincidentally, featured a slightly older protagonist than those of the other stories: a young woman living in her parents' home who is exasperated when relatives inconveniently show up unannounced at dinnertime. Exciting, no, but wryly amusing, yes. It makes me relatively cheerful about having another Mary Wilkins Freeman story collection -- one not meant for children -- on my to-be-read pile.

My copy has a beautifully intact dust jacket, the one you can see here, which is nice for me, but makes me feel a little sad for the book, as it most likely means that it wasn't read by its original owners with great enthusiasm, or perhaps not even read at all. I almost wish it didn't have a jacket, because the charming pictoral boards (which you can see if you click on "more photos" somewhere up above) are actually much more attractive.

Entertaining listening 🎶😮

Thirteen will written family relationships adventure thrillers short stories by Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman about family life and how they get along with each other and friends. I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a quick read. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 to Alexa as I do because of eye issues and damage from nerve damage caused by shingles. 🏡🔰👒☺. 2022
