Act Like Nothing's Wrong: The Montage Art of Winston Smith

"Montage art is like instant surrealism. If Dr. Frankenstein had worked with paper instead of body parts, he'd have been a collage artist. I use a scalpel, but instead of stitches I use glue." ---Winston Smith, page 22 in "Act Like Nothing's Wrong." Odds are you have seen Winston Smith's collage art. If you never perused the insane Winston Smith creations on Dead Kennedys' album covers (not to mention the infamous Dead Kennedys' DK logo), you have probably ran across his sweetly twisted magazine art collages somewhere in the media. Chances are you may have seen an image like "Force Fed War" (Mom nursing baby with a fighter aircraft instead of a bottle) or the various Reagan-Ridiculing collages. And there's a good chance you associate these collages with Jello Biafra and The Dead Kennedys, but have never actually heard the name of the creator, Winston Smith.

Terry Gilliam showed me that one could create art without drawing or painting. Winston Smith inspired me to try it myself. I spent countless hours in high school studying his collage inserts for the Dead Kennedys, and without his inspiration I would not be an artist today.

OK! Let me tell you the story of another book, which can't be found here for some dumb reason, and which I am too lazy to import.
Winston Smith teamed up with Kosuke Kawamura to create "22 Idols" in 2011 from Erect Lab (erect-magazine.com) The theme of big J on the money cross is here thruout in all his hyper-saturated glory.
It is the book that has earned the 5 stars here, because it is awesome. I only wish it was more oversized and coffee-table-y.

He does what he does well but Smith's politics are nowhere near as edgy as his art. Very nice book though and his collages are awesome.
