chapters I read:

- Peter Marris, "Just Rewards" : makes the distinction between meritocracy and capitalist meritocracy.

- Peter Saunders, "Popular Meritocracy" : right wing defense of meritocracy; explains meritocracy's popularity. (focus on p. 192)

- Ruth Lister, "ladder of opportunity or engine of inequality" : left/liberal critique.

- David Willets, "The Future of Meritocracy," : uses same passages from Hayek as we do, re: whether to tell people of the separation of dessert from merit.

- Richard Sennett, "What do we mean by talent?" : excellent empirical work on what middle level managers look for in hiring.
