The Freedom of Opinion in Islam

Rate this book
In this short but important treatise, Shaykh ‘Abdus-Salâm al-Basyoni weighs in on the ongoing global discourse about freedom of expression. He reviews the history of freedom of opinion in the West and compares that with how Islam approaches the issue. He examines the arguments in favour of unrestricted freedom of expression in light of some actual consequences. Shaykh al-Basyoni demonstrates that the freedom to express one's opinion is a fundamental right that is respected and protected by Islamic law. He argues that this right is embedded in the laws and principles of Islam, and shows how crucial limitations placed upon freedom of opinion work to protect the rights of individuals, their privacy, their property and their honour, as well as to preserve the sanctity of human life and the security of human societies.

The English translation of this book was written by Ahmad Rami ash-Shahid.

Ash Shay al Basyony has shown through this book convincingly that Islam, far from being a hindrance to free expression of opinion, is profoundly embedded with principles, elements, strategies, commands, practices etc, which if applied can guarantee perpetual well being in the society.

Contrary to popular perception in the West that Islam has No Freedom of Expression , Islam establishes the foundation for social embodiment of just relation between rulers and ruled, the ruled among themselves, and the society in community and with other nations.

Islam gives Muslims the opportunity to express his views and thoughts freely to the extent of urging him to sacrifice his life in the cause of truth.

The Universality of Islam to address the human conditions, to protect the rights of individual, their privacy, their property and their honour is undeniable throughout history and can only be refuted by falsehood.

I also got this one for free at a book fair. It is more abstract than "'Polygamy in Islam," but still informative.
