Danie Brooks discovered a beautiful and perplexing Japanese scroll depicting about 50 exotic birds which were given to Tsunayoshi, the eccentric Shogun of Japan in 1690. The author found that this beautiful and unique treasure was not only a pictorial inventory of royal gifts, but also an intricate and mystical collection of symbols and messages. The birds depicted in the scroll were painted more than a century before Audubon, and all from live studies. The 421-page book contains 145 color pictures and countless illustrations.
