There is a newer (4th) edition of this book by David Naggar. Purchase the 4th edition, rather than this edition.
The title says it all. This revised, updated and expanded edition offers savvy dealmaking techniques, methods to protect musical works, and career-building and money-saving tips for musicians. It is an invaluable primer for artists and songwriters who feel like they are at the mercy of industry pros.
Among the topics covered choosing agents, managers and attorneys, sending out material, record company deals, distribution, streaming, royalty rates, copyrights, music publishing contracts, creating one's own publishing company, trademarks, music videos, issues between band members, touring, and music for film, television and multimedia.
I liked this book because it was fairly condensed, while still containing a lot of information. It stayed interesting from start to finish. As the title hints to, though it did go into complicated subjects, the text stayed understandable. The author also used real examples too show his points, instead of just throwing out information. Along with specifics, it also talked about broader subjects, but in the end always brought it back to specific examples. Overall, I think it was a pretty good book, and though it was nice that it stayed condensed, it could have included a bit more.
