Teach Me How to Say It Right: Helping Your Child with Articulation Problems

Rate this book
Articulation disorder, the most common speech communication problem, is identified in approximately 1 million preschool children each year. Research suggests that problems with articulation, if left unchecked, can lead to reading and spelling difficulties, social challenges, and self-esteem problems. The strongest resource a child with an articulation problem can have is a well-informed parent who knows which articulation behaviors are normal, which are not, and how best to guide his or her child through the process of speech therapy. This book helps parents decide whether the sound errors their child is experiencing are developmental and within normal limits for their age. The book offers a range of strategies to employ when a child does need some extra help to work through a particular speech difficulty. The book also addresses the emotions parents deal with and devotes a chapter to signs and symptoms of other common communication problems that may co-exist.

Do NOT buy this book if you think it will help you teach your child to say R's or th's. A complete waste of time and money.

Time will tell if the strategies in this book are effective, but I found it informative and helpful.

My son is three with a fairly mild articulation delay. This book provided very little helpful information. Alot of it was common sense, although good information to reinforce what I need to do to help him. I do plan to try the exercises for developing each sound with my son, but I don't expect any major breakthroughs as a result of reading this.

This would be a good book for parents of toddlers. Lots of common sense advice as well as little word games for people who are starting to understand how sounds work in words.

The following activities are good for building mouth strength: blowing bubbles, blowing kisses, blowing whistles and party favors, blowing on pinwheels, and humming.

very helpful tips for correcting speech issues, divided by each sound/ speech pattern issue. outside of speech therapy with a professional, by far the best resource i've found to help my children with articulation issues.

Not helpful for older children at all. It would have been more helpful when my son was two, but there still wasn't much technical help for lip and tongue placement.

Easy read. Some good information for parents. Poorly edited.
