I purchased this book as a child. And I wish I could find it again.
Beautiful illustrations.
About a family travelling West on a Wagon Train. One of the girls gets sick so they stay behind with a small number of other wagons.
Lucky they do as the main wagon train Is attacked and killed by Native Anericans. You actually see the attack in illustrations, which may be the reason why it's no longer available as certain people don't want to push the thought that certain groups were not aggressors only victims.
The family and those who stayed with them carry on the journey. I won't spoil the rest.

The family is headed west. Pa gives one of the girls a wagon book so she can write down their adventures. The girl is befriended by Big Chokey, a man with a wooden leg. Along the trail they encounter many hardships. Her sister, Louisa, drinks some bad water and later dies. Peter, her brother, gets washed down stream when they cross a river. They meet friendly and hostile Indians. They even survive a buffalo stampede due to Big Chokey's quick thinking. Finally they find a place to build their home. Before he moves on, Big Chokey gives the girl his wooden leg. He has made himself a new one.

This book presents a realistic view of the hardships faced by pioneers heading through the American West.
The journey west is captured in the diary of a small girl travelling on a wagon train. They face fighting Native Americans, escaping a buffalo stampede, battling sickness, death, and bad weather.
They finally reach their reward on the frontier, where they begin to carve out a new and better life for themselves.
The pictures are realistic, although there are often more than one picture to a page. The text of the story is simple.
