Ray Hogan (1908-1998) was born in Missouri but spent his life in New Mexico. His father was a Western marshal and lawman. He has written over 100 books. His work has been translated into 16 languages and filmed.
Hogan writes a good yarn. Tom is after a stolen horse and on the way he encounters a girl in trouble, some bank robbers, and a few Apaches. If you are hoping for a horse story you'll get a western romance instead.
The characters aren't as well drawn as Louis L'Amour's but still a fast paced, interesting story.
