Performing racial equity with integrity and knowledgeably is a universal challenge for colleges and universities. The purpose of this book is to put forth a new way of thinking and understanding of academic organizations as racialized entities. The making of a more just higher education requires that we learn how to see “race” circulating through the veins of “leadership” “advising” “institutional research” “academic departments” “curricula” “hiring” “assessment” “student support services” etc. Campus From Performance Equity to Authentic Racial Justice will provide the tools that can decenter “whiteness” guard against reinstatement of the false belief in the hierarchy of human value. The authors will discuss why there is a disconnect between racial equity language and race neutral action and address challenges with Theoretical/Conceptual Grounding and Moving from Performative and Aspirational to Authentic. In addition, the authors will explain what makes an institution performative, aspirational, and authentic and provide examples, and tools to assess one’s own institution, department, etc.
