For many women, busyness, worry, and discouragement can drain all of the joy and passion from life. The tyranny of the urgent, fears about tomorrow, and even small disappointments quickly leave them tired, frustrated, and discontent. But it doesn't have to be that way, says personal life coach and speaker Danna Demetre. In What Happened to My Life? Danna invites readers to join her on a 40-day journey where they'll learn to -slow down and make better choices -reinterpret life and have more realistic expectations -choose the very best from all the good -and pursue God in a life-changing way Whether dealing with a life crisis or simply feeling that life is not all they'd hoped for, readers will find that this new book helps them to find authentic contentment and joy regardless of circumstances. And to move from simply surviving to truly thriving once again.
Danna's voice is one that I think will resonate with many women. Too often, we feel overwhelmed, tired and discouraged. We all know that we should make changes in our lives, but what do we change and how? Danna explores these issues and more. With personal stories and practical application, you learn about balance which is so important in life; balance that includes time for yourself and time for God.
You can read the book and do the 40-day devotional at the end, or you can read it, ponder it and do the devotional at a later time. However you choose to apply this book to yourself, you will come away renewed and refreshed. This is a book that I can see myself going back to again and again.
First off, to fully experience this book, I expect you need to do the full 40-day Bible study - which (in the effort of full disclosure) I have not completed.
With that said, I find it ironic that right before I picked up this book to read, I had a conversation with a friend who expressed some of the "If" scenarios that Demetre outlines in her "is this book for you" introduction.
My friend expressed frustrations on how to balance work, family and faith. She also talked about a lack of joy in her life.
I listened, completely understanding everything she was saying, knowing that she was not alone - I too have experienced the same frustrations - especially when trying to balance life and a job in the church.
(But in another effort of full disclosure, I experienced the same feelings balancing life in and out of a newsroom when I was working full time as a journalist.
Somehow, I think, like most women, I struggle with finding a way to have joy and contentment, even when life well, tossed me a few lemons.
I appreciated Demetre's hard hitting questions and easy writing style. I like how she incorporates "real" stories into her chapters - to help you fully understand the topics.
I also appreciated Demetre's complete openness - especially in the chapter that talks about the cancer of discontentment. It made me wonder if I have let life's disappointments over the past 12 years build up, almost like a cancerous growth, allowing it to steel my passion and joy.
I'm going to try to do the study in her book for the next 40 days, simply because I'm hoping the book will live up to this tag line - "It's time to move from simply surviving to truly thriving once again!"
(This year, my "one word" for the year has been "half-full." I've been trying to find the "half-full" things in life. I'm hoping that this study is another step in the right direction.)
What Happened To My Life? is a book that will help women find new passion, purpose, and joy in their life. Danna Demetre knows what it is like to be searching for those three things and now she is helping others to find it through this book and the included 40 day devotional.
I appreciated the honesty and vulnerability with which Danna wrote. She not only wrote about some important things, but openly shared how her own life has been changed. Encouraging doesn't even seem to begin to cover the refreshing content of this book! It is biblical, applicable, and helpful.
My favorite part of the book was the message she wove through the whole book about the importance of what we are feeding our minds. Danna excellently explains the power of scripture to change your life by transforming your mind. She does not give "just another program" but rather real answers for life change.
The 40 day devotional is simple to use for any woman at any stage of life. While the devotional thought is different each day, the application section keeps the same thread going through all 40 days to help you keep building as you establish new changes. It is easy to use and highly effective in being a tool to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ.
Whether you choose to do the 40 day devotional or not, the first 2 sections of this book are easy to read and wonderfully helpful, uplifting, and comforting. This book is a must-read in part or in entirety.
