Sep 6, 720am ~~ Another great addition to my sumo library.
The author gives a bit of sumo history and general information, and then describes his day at a tournament (including a tour of the souvenir shops) and pictures showing the ring from the different levels of seats available. Binoculars highly recommended if you sit in the balcony!
I enjoyed the book very much. As with others in my collection, it was published in the early 1990's; I imagine to take advantage of the popularity boom sumo was experiencing outside of Japan at the time. This of course means that references to higher ranking wrestlers will be out of date now, and so would be the price information, so anyone expecting current data on such things would need to look elsewhere.
But if you want a nice little book that will help you understand the sport and give you a secondhand experience of attending both a regular and an exhibition meeting, Sumo Watching will be just fine.
Look, this is a pretty niche book. It’s not going to appeal to many people.
But if you’re at all interested in this sport, it’s a pretty handy guide to understand what you’re looking at and how to watch sumo. The writer himself seemed to be going through a learning experience, and it was nice to go along with that ride. Note that this is not a narrative, however.
It’s rare that a book is actually exactly what it claims to be.
