I read this book a few years ago and recently re-read it to remind myself of how well it was written and conceptualized by the author. This was the first book I read from the author and I immediately took a liking for his style, narration, and adeptness at constructing an image in the reader's mind.

The book weaves human emotions and relationships together with events beyond his/her control. I also enjoyed the fact that the author used the historical context of the Kashmir conflict without choosing sides for both the reader and the author himself, and yet, make one weigh the moral nature of the conflict itself. If you are going into this fictional account to learn more about the conflict then you may come out disappointed, for obvious reasons, but if you're looking for a gripping, yet casual read, then this might be it for you.

I have read the book multiple times and enjoyed it thoroughly each time.

Personal rating: 4,5/5

Judul: The homecoming
Penulis: Shashi warrier
Penerbit: Literati
Dimensi: 510 hal, cetakan pertama Oktober 2009
ISBN: 9789791978415

Quite interesting!

This is a book with immense emotions and, values of relations and their reality. The tone is disturbing and the idea will nonetheless remind you of your own scars. The author has used a versatile language and relatable idea, that gives you a reality while reading. You almost feel the character and his pain.
The book reflects two ideas. The first one is the external conflict, the brutal reality of politics and society and how it effects a common man. The second idea is the inner conflict of the author, his close relations and how is bereaved from his own family.
I found it very interesting how the narrator has put the character of the cobbler, which one feel is unneccessary but still the most relatable character in the story.
Finally, i would quote my favorite line from the story.
I WONDER HOW THE FABRIC OF MY LIFE CAME APART SO QUICKLY . IT WAS A RICH FABRIC, SOMETHING I HAD TAKEN GREAT PAINS AND OVER 3 DECADES TO WEAVE. WE MIGHT EACH RECOVER INDIVIDUALLY , BUT THE RICHNESS OF THE FABRIC IS GONE.

This is a book I have read recently. The story basically revolves around the moral conflicts as well as the material losses experienced by the people in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Line of Control region. The political side of the story is extremely sensitive as one may defy the arguments put forth by the author in many occasions. And its personal side is quite disturbing. The central character of the story is Javed Sharif, a businessman, based on Bangalore who retires from the family business and decides to settle in his home state Kashmir. As the events unfurl , his homecoming which was expected to be a peaceful one turns out to be a tragic one as his younger son was arrested and alleged to be part of the terrorist activities and elder one betrayed him and left him bankrupted for the rest of his life.

The story beautifully presents the feelings of 3 generations in a family of which one was associated with the freedom movement. It also shows how a family bound by the bond of love disintegrates under changing political and social circumstances . The bleak picture of the indifferent attitude of the authorities to the layman is also well presented . Intertwined with the main theme is the vivid description of the scenic beauty of Kashmir. The author often draws comparison between the scenic beauty and the political unrest prevalent there. In the story the drastic turn of events start in a very auspicious occasion. This story does not end in an optimistic note. Although bloodshed is mentioned in a few places the story has very less elements of violence. This book helps us to judge the so called ‘single reality’ from different perspectives as it is said that there could be more than a single reality. It is a book worth reading as it takes us to a different world from which we would not return till we finish reading it.

I would like to conclude by quoting these lines from the book–’ I WONDER HOW THE FABRIC OF MY LIFE CAME APART SO QUICKLY . IT WAS A RICH FABRIC, SOMETHING I HAD TAKEN GREAT PAINS AND OVER 3 DECADES TO WEAVE. WE MIGHT EACH RECOVER INDIVIDUALLY , BUT THE RICHNESS OF THE FABRIC IS GONE.’

It basically a story about Javed who travel for his business and has a family in Kashmir. He isn't attach with his family so much but he travels to fulfill his family's needs. After awhile, he plans to get retire and moves back to Kashmir but on his father's birthday everything's change. He has 3 children and he never realized what his children are capable to do, he shocks on his relation with his friends, he has problem with his business, a girl breaks his heart, and his family turns against him. He is devastating cause finally he realize he was living in a lie.

Shashi has a great capability on writing a story. Unlike other books, he leaves this novel ends without any solution, or in short, he is telling a reality not a happy ending. He makes the readers to think the best solution for Javed by letting the reader feels all the emotions.

this is the first shashi warrier book i read.Wasn't really impressed.it is insightful to know about the conflicts in kashmir and the opinions of people but i dont think the story was smart.certain parts are just a drag and the lead character is very fickle minded.only good if u like to read a fictional book on yet another war-stricken land.

It's fine. When I choose this book it is because I want to know more about Kashmir from the point of view of a writer, since many times, a history book can not capture exactly how people's feeling about a place and problems that they must face. At some points, this book meet my expectation in that, but I must say I don't really like the writing style of the writer. Too slow.

A little short of awesome. It could be only because I based my expectations from this novel on 'Curfewed Night', which is a wrong thing to do. A definite good read that juxtaposes personal tragedies and a national one very starkly indeed.
