The book is probably an embaressment for the author, who is a well known literary crtic for the Independent, as he hasn't written anything like it since. For me though, it remains a wondeful exploration of the many guises of love, set in 18th century Italy.

In 1847 Italy is on the brink of revolution. A young Englishman Edward Rivers arrives in the small town of Villafranca and a tale of passion, jealousy and betrayal unfolds. In this claustrophobic world he learns about himself and how he relates to the people around him. Loved the atmosphere of heat and intrigue and the fact that even in the darkness there are glimmers of love and hope.
