Theology after Ricoeur: New Directions in Hermeneutical Theology

Rate this book
Dan Stiver presents the implications of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutical philosophy for a postmodern theology by providing a comprehensive interpretation of Ricoeur and then applying Ricoeur's hermeneutical theory to biblical interpretation and theology. Stiver situates Ricoeur's contributions in the Yale-Chicago debate and shows how Ricoeur's textual theory provides a real alternative to George Lindbeck (on the one hand) and deconstruction (on the other).

I benefitted greatly from Dr. Stiver's teaching at Southern Seminary in the 80s, so I was delighted to get my hands on his review of Paul Ricouer's philosophy in this slim volume. For the first time since those days at Southern I feel as if I have some insight into the work of this important philosopher and theologian. Dan Stiver's book is as clear and cogent as his lectures were nearly 40 years ago.
