A collection of hilarious and thoroughly quotable quotes from by far the wittiest politician ever to grace the Australian (perhaps the world) political stage. R.I.P. Gough. Once there were giants.

It is hard to find a better political orator than the great Whitlam, and this book certainly perpetuates this view.

An absolute joy for anyone interested in Australian political history and the charismatic leadership of Gough Whitlam. In just 96 pages, Wells masterfully compiles some of Whitlam’s most memorable, sharp, and laugh-out-loud quotable moments, capturing not just the man but the mischievous spirit he brought to politics.

This compact collection reads like a celebration of Whitlam’s incisive humour and razor-sharp intellect. Whether you’re a lifelong admirer of Whitlam or new to his legacy, this book offers a fascinating insight into how one of Australia’s most influential prime ministers used wit as a political tool. Deane Wells’s selections are thoughtful, entertaining, and often surprisingly poignant, reminding readers that humour and political insight often go hand in hand.

Deane’s selection of the famous “Kerr’s curr” quote (as the final quote of the) truly brought the book to an eventful end.

Illustrated throughout and sprinkled with context that adds depth without overwhelming, this book is a must-read for lovers of political memoirs and anyone who enjoys a clever line delivered with style. Whitlam’s spirit leaps off the page, fierce, funny, and unforgettable.

Certainly a quick read which leaves you wanting more; more of Whitlam.
