This monograph, first published in 1976 and widely approved by specialists, is reissued with many new supplements. Using the term "renaissance" for characterizing the cultural blossoming in the Palaeologan epoch, the Byzantines themselves created the problem of the Byzantine Renaissance. Included in the book are a Russian translation of G. G. Plethon's treatise "On the virtues"; unknown texts of T. Methochite; George of Trebizond's astronomical fragment; letters of Lianoro Lianori and of Demetrius Chalcondyles, and the author's essay on philological discussion about the authenticity of patristic texts at the Council of Florence.
