One For Me, One For You

"Cookie jar. Stool./Cookies? Cool./One for me. One for you./That makes two." So begins an adventure in simple math--the conceptual adding of numbers--beyond standard counting books. As the child brings more cookies and toy cars, and takes some away, the value of sharing becomes meaningful even to the youngest members of the family. Playfully making points about both math and sharing, Grace Lin's dynamic patterns and vibrant colors leap off the page.

One For Me, One For You is a book about sharing and math. It was a cute concept and I liked the characters and little twist at the end. The authors made this a rhyming book with limited wording. while I like the flow of the rhymes, there was sometimes a lot of information in a couple verses that required some time to stop and think about what the page actually said. This allowed for good natural conversations with my toddler, but it really distracted from the flow of the book. Overall, not a bad book to use when teaching a young one about sharing and simple math.

Teaches both math and sharing. Two friends figure out how they can divide 1, or 2, or 3, or (oh joy) 4 cookies! They consider all the options, 1 for me and 3 for you, etc. And then apply it to 3 toy cars to play with. Again, considering all the options and figuring how to make it fair. A good book to initiate discussions about sharing, and to get kids thinking about some math concepts.

This is a cute book about math and sharing for young children. It's a good way to emphasize even and odd numbers, as well as being equal. The pictures and wording are very clear for students to count and split objects. Teachers can use this in the beginning of the year to stress the importance of sharing and also to work with basic numbers.
