Smoke Screens: The Truth About Tobacco

Rate this book
This is a comprehensive book that analyses the scientific evidence linking tobacco smoking to disease and premature death, as well as the political motivations that have led to the anti-smoking movement becoming so large. The book explores all aspects of tobacco smoking, including: smoking trends among social classes; detection bias and its impact on diagnosis; and examines in depth the evidence linking smoking to specific diseases; how attitudes towards smoking have changed over time from being used medicinally to being the scourge of society; and how and why tobacco smoking has the negative status it does today. It objectively dissects the politics and science of smoking trends and issues, looking at vital, complex components that are often overlooked. A must-read for smokers and non-smokers alike, Smoke Screens: The Truth About Tobacco is a controversial work that challenges one of the most widely accepted beliefs of our time.

This book is a dense and well written analysis on if the anti-smoking crusade is legitimate, and presents compelling arguments that greatly differ from mainstream opinion.

Hard read but totally worth it

In this increasingly "byte-sized", "pre-chewed" information society, somebody actually took the time to gather revelant facts and data and take a long, informative look at the smoking crusade.
If you're not of the parroting 'sheeple' and actually like to do your own research, this book is a must read.

What a great book with which to end my 2025 reading challenge! White is smart and thorough and offers a COMPLETELY different perspective on tobacco than we've been fed throughout history--and he backs it all up.

In real life, I had noticed a lot of what he points out (and backs up with stats) in this book: Smoking has gone way down due to anti-smoking campaigns and propaganda; however, lung cancer rates remain about the same while asthma and allergies have gone way up.

Definite recommend for anyone who questions everything...
