Second in the Project Alpha series.Earth 2133Logan is an Alpha—a genetically enhanced assassin—who has escaped from the lab that created him. He is now outside the Gate, a high-tech shield that protects the enclosed city from the contaminated and lawless land outside. Shot while evading security forces sent to eliminate him, Logan’s only goal is survival.Mercy Dockins is a healer. Her world is shaken to its foundations when a stranger is brought to her near death. As she heals him, her body and soul respond to him, overwhelming her with sexual desire. With little more than a look and a touch, passion flares out of control, consuming them both. But this stranger is dangerous to not only her well-being, but also to the safety of everyone she loves. And he has brought the security forces right to her door.
Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.
One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel and life would never be the same.
N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
Assassin’s Awakening is book two in the Project Alpha series by N.J. Walters. This book was previously released in 2009 by a different publisher under the name of Have Mercy.
I fell in love with the first book of this series, Embracing Silence and was so excited to get to this second book. Although you could read these as stand alones, there are details that make a lot more sense if you read them in order.
It is the year 2133 on Earth. Logan, otherwise known as Alpha 2, lives outside the Gate where only the rich and privileged live within the protective enclosed city. Logan is an enhanced human, made by the Piedmont Corporation for the sole purpose of being used as a weapon to kill. But they didn’t plan for the alphas to learn to override the microchip computer they had implanted in their brains and become able to think for themselves and make their own decisions. They didn’t plan for them to develop emotions. The project was terminated and all of the alpha’s were killed, except for the two that escaped, one of which was Logan.
Survival is a day to day basis. On this day, the security police have spotted Logan and he is injured. He wakes up tethered to a bed, bandaged and gazing up into the most beautiful eyes he has ever seen. He has no idea where he is but for that moment, he doesn’t care.
“Something about her called to him on a deep level. It was as though she’d been imprinted on every cell in his body. Created specifically for him.”
Mercy Dockins lives in a small community they call Hope. She is a healer and grows herbs to make her own healing concoctions. She takes in orphaned children and tries to give them the safest living environment she can. When two of the older boys bring home an injured man, she patches him up. It’s when he wakes up and stares up at her that her world shifts.
I want to stop right here and tell you that one of the hottest scenes I have ever read happen right here. And there was no touching involved. Just for your information. Whew!
Mercy and Logan have an instant chemistry that won’t be denied. But she knows there is something different about him. How can he heal so fast? How is he so strong? When the truth comes out, she knows he must leave to protect the children. He could bring the security police right to their doorstep. But even knowing this, letting him go will be difficult.
I am loving this series. These books are scorching. But it’s more than that. These alphas have had such a horrible life until their escapes. Just feeling the sun on their bodies was such luxury. For Logan to finally experience love was so beautiful. And Mercy was a selfless, giving woman who never thought she’d find love in the way the world is now. To finally find it and then have to send him away was heartbreaking. I am so excited for the next book in the series, Alpha’s Revenge.
Assassin's Awakening, this second entry into the Project Alpha series, centers on Logan and Mercy. He is Alpha 2 and apparently flawed because he is more emotional than an Alpha should be. Mercy is very likable. I mean come on; it’s hard to not like someone who takes in orphans. Actually, I liked both of them and their story line even though it is a bit Florence Nightingale effect. Unlike its predecessor, Assassin's Awakening, doesn’t seem to progress beyond the romance of the main characters. No new knowledge of the how and why of this new world is imparted so this is pretty much just a filler romance for one of the Alphas that gets away from The General.
I have to keep reminding myself this is erotica with a side of dystopia. I really wish it were the reverse because I was really getting into the plot line. Unfortunately, just as the plot was getting interesting, it is interrupted by sex. Well, it wasn’t BAD sex, it was more of bad timing. And speaking of timing, Whoa Nelly! Think maybe, possibly you might want to learn at least his name before going for the Big O? And I promise I won’t hash out how fast the L-Word is brought up. I’m hoping the next book has more plot. However, Assassin's Awakening still made for good reading.
I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine. Stars - 3, Flames - 4
Just like with the first book in the Project Alpha series, N.J. Walters packed a huge amount of content into Assassin’s Awakening even though it was a fairly short book.
Logan is Tienan’s fellow alpha that we heard about but never met in Embracing Silence. Even though they think of each other as brothers, Alpha’s are engineered in a way that two can’t be together for long periods of time or they end up fighting.
Mercy is a healer from a compound on the northern edge of the Outer City, a place where security forces rarely venture. When an increase in the security force’s activity results in one of Logan’s safe houses getting compromised, he decided now would be a good time to go exploring to the North. Unfortunately, he ended up getting severely wounded and brought to Mercy by a couple of children who had found him.
Just like with Tienan, when Logan met Mercy the connection was immediate, undeniable by either of them, and fraught with problems. Logan has a mission to take down General Caruthers and to bring down the wall and Alpha’s always finish their mission. To add to it, Mercy isn’t alone since she has taken in several orphans to raise plus she is the healer for the entire area. With the security forces hell bent on finding Logan, if he stayed he would bring danger to her front door, if he hasn’t already.
The chemistry between Logan and Mercy was palpable, like you could reach out and touch it. Even when duty got in the way of acting on their desires, just the anticipation of the night to come was full of heat and longing. When they actually do get together… Wow! It was everything it promised to be.
Both Mercy and Logan are given a glimpse of what they consider an impossible dream come true: a home, a partner, a normal everyday dinner shared with the children, but they know it’s fleeting and not going to last. The emotions and feelings were real but so was the fact that he could not stay.
I have to say, with the angst of the impending end to Mercy and Logan blanketing things, the children were a needed happy distraction when things got too deep. I loved getting to know them, especially Evan who was extremely mature and fiercely loyal to Mercy. At seventeen he was trying to be the man of the house, doing everything he could to keep the children alive and thriving.
With the action, suspense, and the unbelievable heat factor I enjoyed Assassin’s Awakening every bit as much as the first book in the series. I do wish it was longer so we could get more backstory on this world and why things are the way they are, but that is my only real complaint. The third book is in my TBR pile and I am hoping I can get to it sooner rather than later.
Rating: 4 Anticipation Can Be Hot Stars

Yessssss. Genetically enhanced soldiers are the cherry on top of the post-apocalyptic pie. They have all these outstanding advantages and then they get turned on by the very people who made them into what they are. HOW CAN I RESIST THIS? (Spoiler: I can't.)
Logan is just the type of engineered soldier I love. He's fast and smart and he cares enough to not let the people he comes in contact with become collateral damage. When that person happens to be Mercy, he goes into full-on protective mode. Which is utterly sweet and completely badass.
Not that Mercy needs Logan's protection. She's smart and determined and she has several very good reasons for keeping herself safe. So when things turn sour and her community is caught in the crossfire, the couple have the means to defend all the things important to them.
As an aside, genetically engineered soldiers burn fast and hot. And all night. *finger guns*
Loving these Alphas and all they're willing to do to protect those who need their help.
I'm going to give the same review to all three books in this series. I thought N.J. Walters was a good writer. I liked the story development, dialogue and flow of the words. I guess I've come to realize that when I'm reading a science fiction or fantasy story, I want that story....not an erotica story. These three stories had the makings of a decent short futuristic sci-fi, but somehow I just felt it was a set up so each story could show two people meet, have some irresistible pull towards each other, have smokin' hot sex. Then have more smokin' hot sex, and finally, after a day or so, fall deeply in love. I would have preferred to have one book, with the story of the futuristic city and the overthrow of the ruling evil council with the various love stories woven in. I will definitely read other work by this author, I think she is talented.
N.J. Walters is a talent writer. She has the ability to pulls readers in quickly with her descriptive writing. There is great dialogue when they are not having sex and the story that sit in between Science fiction and romance. Everything is so well thought out bringing the reader into a dystopian world where men are created to be the perfect killing machines What the writer fall back on his sex. Hot Smokin sex. I really think the author could pull back a little on the sex and create an even more balanced world. I understand this book is Erotica but can't erotica and a balanced story work? Each character is pulled to the other in a way they have never felt before. The story was written so the characters would have very graphic sex. I hate to see talent wasted in Erotica because the story had potential but used sex to drive it when actions would have worked better. Advance Copy From netgalley

With his heightened senses he can tell she is turned on by him and he is very turned on by her. He determines to make her his.
When Logan stays too long and brings the security force to their door what will happen next?
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you want a book that is primarily sex, alpha males who can make a woman come from just talking to her, and very little story that adds to the whole of the series and builds the world their in... this is the book for you.
if you want more story, more world building, more in depth relationships that are more than just me alpha, you mine... this won't be your thing.
I'm not faulting the story, I'm just bummed because the base story that ties this book and book one together could be really interesting.

The world building continues in the second installment of the Project Alpha series. This time, we find Logan, a/k/a Alpha 2, on the run from the security forces sent to terminate him and Tienen. Knowing that being caught will result in his death and leave Tienen alone with his plans to destroy the Ruling Counsel and General Caruthers.
When he meets Mercy, the healer for the village aptly named "Hope", he knows that this woman is the one that would complete him, to heal the wounds of his heart not just his bodily ones. Mercy proves over and over again just how strong she is and that both thrills and terrifies him.
Assassin’s Awakening is book 2 in the Project Alpha series and was a great 5 star read.
I have to say this was my favorite so far in this series. Logan is a hot and dominant alpha with a huge heart. Don’t get me wrong I really like Tienan as well but Logan is my #1 Alpha.
Logan finds himself in quite the predicament. He wakes up strapped to a table with a woman tending to his wounds. The last thing he remembers is being shot. Luckily a couple of children discovered him and brought him to “Hope” where Mercy could help him.
Mercy is known as a healer, she is astonished at how fast Logan's wounds are healing. There is something about this man that makes her body feel feverish. And let's just say that Logan’s voice is very magical (when you read the book you will see what I mean). Logan also feels the chemistry between them and is not shy about how he feels.
I’m Logan and you’re mine.
As things move forward Logan stays to recover from his injuries and he connects with Mercy and the children to the point where he doesn’t want to leave them but knows he has to in order to keep them safe. Then things take a dangerous turn. Can Logan keep everyone safe?
For once in his damn life, he wanted to feel as though he belonged somewhere.
There is so much more, action, suspense, hot alpha’s, strong female and some extremely steamy scenes. I really enjoyed getting more of the history on the Alpha;s. I feel like I got more of an understanding from Logan’s story. He is a very dangerous, killing machine with a huge caring heart who is willing to protect those he loves no matter what. I really liked seeing Aiden and the Resistance. All of the secondary characters added a great element to the story. I was pleasantly surprised with the ending. I’m looking forward to the next book, I feel like things are starting to come to a head and we will finally see Logan, Aiden and Tienan get the revenge they are seeking. 1-click and get started today.

This short book was previously released as 'Have Mercy in 2009. It's a quick read about a genetically enhanced human who escaped before the lab and the General terminated him. We get dropped into his story as he's being hunted by the City Security force. Logan was shot several times and was found unconscious and brought back to a compound on the outskirts of the city.
Mercy is a healer and has been taking in orphans for awhile. When two of her boys bring back an unconscious, wounded man, she treats his wounds not realizing who he was.
This is an instant passion romance. From the moment Logan wakes up and smells her he's attracted to Mercy and flames only burn brighter every moment he's with her.
Mercy has no idea why she's suddenly so turned on by a man but she can't seem to stop the attraction and wants to keep him, even though she knows he has to leave.
While the heat between these two is off the charts, the insta love was hard to buy into, it needed more time to simmer to make it believable. I think these two deserved more time and development, just like the background story of the alpha fight against the evil council. While this book does have an HEA for the couple it felt more like a few chapters from a bigger book, so this was just an okay read for me.
In the year 2133 earth has been through something horrific that has left the haves inside a secure gated area and the have-nots outside to be preyed upon. The ruling class is ruthless entitled and privileged. They are also morons to think they can rule forever…and it is my hope that in book three of the series they will get their comeuppance.
There are at least three surviving Alphas – men bred in a laboratory to be enhanced killing machines. When the project is terminated so are the Alphas – at least most of them. In book one Tienan, Alpha 1, was the main character and his love story is told. He had a friend named Logan and he also met Alpha 10, Adrian. This book is Logan’s story and he is Alpha 2.
Logan has a run-in with military forces and is seriously injured. He is taken to a compound where he is treated by a healer named Mercy. The two are instantly attracted to one another and as this is futuristic fantasy and not reality insta-lust seems to work – after all, nobody knows how long they have to live so why not take advantage of good times when they present themselves. That said, Logan and Mercy are more like soul mates that are meant to be together forever.
There are some cute orphans that Mercy cares for, steamy scenes between Logan and Mercy, a skirmish and a larger battle that all take place in a very few days. My guess is that Adrian will star in the third book of the series. I am hopeful that the three alphas will work with the resistance to topple those living in luxury inside the gate when the trilogy ends.
Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Press for the copy to read. This is my honest review.
Compared to the first book, Have Mercy mostly focused on Logan and Mercy's feelings for one another than the supposed to be plot of the book, which is to destroy the inner city. I wish that instead of the erotica, this story should be focused more on the sci-fi part. I have observed that the action scenes are only 3-4 chapters, and the rest on emotions and sex parts.
Anyway, compared to Tienan, Logan is a soppy man, more emotional than what I like. They also fall in love fast just like the first book. With so many scenes happening, I'm surprised that it all just happen in three days. The choice that Mercy created at the end is so selfish, but as usual, there is a compromised and that harsh decision didn't happen. I wish that on the third book, there are more action scenes and planning to conquer the enemies.
Assassin’s Awakening is an entertaining sequel to Embracing Silence and continues to follow the lives of the enhanced soldiers and their fight against the corrupt powers that created them.
Logan, also known as Alpha Two, is injured in battle and rescued by some ragtag orphans and taken to their adopted mother Mercy to heal. Knowing that she’s risking their safety and torn by her devotion to the homeless children relying on her care, Mercy is powerless against the magnetism she feels towards Logan.
A captivating story that allows readers to watch as Mercy evolves into a sensual and seductive siren; while Logan discovers hidden emotions, and a deep abiding passion that only Mercy can evoke.
Another fast-paced, scorchingly hot, one sitting read; Assassin’s Awakening is every bit as gripping and addictive as book one.
There is so much more, action, suspense, hot alpha’s, strong female and some extremely steamy scenes. I really enjoyed getting more of the history on the Alpha's. Still have the idea of missing something and had the feeling this book was hard for me to get in/start. But when it was flowing I coudn't stop. But even then still the begging was hard to get through,

Book 2 in the futuristic Project Alpha series. 3 1/2 stars. Logan (Alpha 2) has lost contact with Tienan his fellow Alpha and is wounded by the patrol troops. He's found by a couple of orphans who've formed a family with Mercy, a healer who lives on the northern edge of the area outside the gate. The attraction is instantaneous and intense. Logan knows he can't stay and endanger Mercy and the kids she's protecting but he's drawn to her anyway and she to him. Even though N.J. Walters writes shorter fast paced novels this one did drag a little bit for me. The endearing characters and hot love scenes made up for it though. I'm looking forward to reading the book in the series.
Unfortunately I have to mark this book as a DNF. I started reading it a few weeks ago and put it down because it wasn't holding my attention, but now that I've picked it up again and it's still not clicking for me - I have to admit defeat.
What I wanted from this was a dystopian, alpha male, fight for freedom kind of story. What I got was a bit of dystopian, and a whole lot of sex and insta-love. This is outside of my typical reading genres already so when I was hoping to break out of my shell and it didn't work out...I'm disappointed.
It's purely my own taste that made me stop reading- the writing itself and editing are both well done.
I love this series! Ms. Walters knows how to build a world and make you live in it. I thought after reading Embracing Silence I was enamored with Tienan but, have mercy! Logan, oh Logan! (snickers)
I can't wait to read the next book and am hoping this series continues on. So if you like a futuristic, post apocalyptic world where the genetically enhanced guy gets his girl and tried to save the little people this series is for you!
This is a great fast paced sci-fi read. Logan is pure Alpha, a genetically enhanced human who has escaped his creators and now they want him dead. When he wakes up Mercy is there, a healing her lives in Hope where she cares for the people. The chemistry between Logan and Mercy is off the charts hot. The story is fast paced an entertaining I really liked it.
These Alphas are pretty hot. Logan is a hard man created by his circumstances. He m e gets Merry and her ready made family. He feels love and starts to hope for that fantasy life. Awe sad one story well thought out.
Oh these Project Alpha Men! It is almost as if it is fated mates, because once they meet their woman, they are all in in a heartbeat. Logan has such a caring side to him, it only made sense he’d end up with a healer. Great heat, great action, great romance <3
A bit of a slow starter, a bit blah blah blah in between but it picked up momentum looking forward to Adrian aka Alpha 10 - Sweet Charity, lasr of the trilogy
