An excellent book on the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. This book starts with the ice ages and first settlers but interestingly progresses through time. The book has hundreds of black and white photographs that keep the pages turning. Chapters include legends & explorations, the key entrepreneurs (like the Mike Ilitch of Detroit, but in the north), the Manitou islands (which I previously knew nothing about), & ends with chapters on the lighthouses, shipwrecks and rescues, and hiking trails. Even if you don’t read every page, I think by reading this book you’ll find something interesting that you’ll Google for more or want to check out the next time you’re in the area.
