What to Expect in Reformed Worship: A Visitor's Guide

Rate this book
Too many churches assume that those in their pews and those who pass through their doors know what worship is and why the Lord commands it. The purpose of this booklet, then, is to educate and acquaint members of Reformed churches as well as those who inquire within their walls with a basic knowledge of what Reformed churches mean when they say, "Worship the Lord." In knowing what to expect, the worshippers' response of praise and thanksgiving will be more active, joyful, and meaningful.

This is a great introduction to a Reformed Worship service. I think a couple caveats are in order though, it walks you through the worship service at Rev. Hyde's church, which makes some particular decisions on liturgical forms that may not be followed in all Reformed churches.

But the overall talking points are valid. Hyde covers: the dialogical principle of worship, the regulative principle, the means of grace, the Sabbath. He even gets into some other helpful discussions, why does the minister wear a robe, and a Reformed basis for the "evangelical feasts" of Christmas, Good Friday, etc, etc.

Good. Brief. Helpful.

Very helpful for those who want to understand the whats and whys of a reformed worship service. It was good for me to learn that there is a reason the gathering of saints on Lord's Day is called a service.

Worship reflects theology.

Here is a very good and brief introduction into Reformed worship. I found it very helpful as I'm still becoming familiar with Reformed distinctives. I particularly enjoyed reading about children in the worship service and reading about word and sacrament ministry. This books covers a lot of bases in only a short amount of pages. So if you are wanting to acquaint yourself more with Reformed worship you can find this book in Redeemers Church Library, it's worth your time!
