When published, this was a five star book, but now, the 50 pages of small black and white reproductions of Rousseau's paintings at the tail end of the book are superfluous to annoying more than anything else. The essay and the reprints of written statements by Rousseau's contemporaries are great, as are the hundred-plus pages (recto only) of full page full color reproductions, however, are wonderful, and the selection, with a strong focus on his still lifes and cityscapes, makes this book a great complement to virtually any other full color book on Rousseau in English, as they all seem to focus on his "exotic" paintings or his portraiture. The perfect second or third book on the artist for someone who's already a fan.
the essay by bouret is nothing special-- valuable mostly for the thorough biographical information and the detailing of rousseau's friendships with alfred jarry and apolliniare. the full-page color reproductions are wonderful, although none of the lovely little cows are in color...
