Along with the usual suspects when it comes to the coming of Christianity to Britain, this book had a few lesser known ones. Hilda of Whitby was a nun I had not heard of previously; a significant woman in that her monastery was chosen as the venue for the culture-changing Synod of Whitby.
A small but important point made in passing by this book concerns the original shape of the Celtic cross. Often said to be a pagan solar symbol, Celtic Saints reveals (as I have seen in greater detail elsewhere - if only I could remember just where) that the Celtic cross is a modification of the original shape, which was a chi-rho, symbolic of 'Christ'.
