Real Time Leadership Development provides research and practices-based guidance and tools for leaders to use to fully leverage experience-based development for their own growth and to build the next generation of leaders in their organization.
I read this book all wrong. Drs. Paul Yost and Mannion Plunkett have attempted to write nothing less than a field manual to leadership development. Recognizing that 21st century business leaders (and leaders of other types) almost always feel pressed for time, they wrote this book to distill a lot of information about leadership development into small, bite-sized pieces that can be read and absorbed "on the fly." Due to this format, the book is probably best read in small chunks in the corporate office. Instead, I read it straight through, cover-to-cover, over the course of several weeks.
The basic premise of this book is a good one. Yost and Plunkett share with us research that indicates that the growth and development of leaders usually occurs on the job, through experiential learning, not through intentional training. They then take us through a series of very short chapters that highlight best practices, describing how a leader, or aspiring leader, can create meaningful experiential learning opportunities for themselves. Topics include finding the right mentors, pursuing stretch assignments and creating development plans among many others. But the information is very dense. I often felt like I was drinking a concentrated frozen fruit juice that had not yet been diluted to its normal ratio.
My advice would be to read this book over a longer period of time than I did (i.e. weeks rather than months). In so doing, you may have a better chance of absorbing the information and acting on it.
(I should also note that Dr. Yost teaches in the I/O psychology department on my campus and our work overlaps from time to time. So, as with all books by people I know, you may wish to take my review with a grain of salt.)
