Living and Partly Living

Rate this book
The memoir of a writer sentenced to hard labor in Stalinist Czechoslovakia, this is a soaring story of hope and survival. Written during the first year of his sentence for offences against the Stalinist regime, it is a shocking but surprisingly humorous account of life under a harsh regime.

I bought this book because I met the man on October 9, 1973 in Baltimore, MD and got to hang out with him. The occasion was the grand opening of the largest (that I'm aware of) showing of Alphonse Mucha posters in America at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. I helped hang the show, which was an honor in itself. Jiří (pronounced year-jzi, as in Gigi) was larger than life as he entered the gallery. Every head turned and wanted to meet him.

I'm pretty biased here, so you'll forgive me if i gush about this book. He was a very talented and well read author. Also a poet, humorist, and true man of the world. I was sad when the book ended. But i understand that there may be 2 follow-up books about the next two prison years. I'm puzzled why this book isn't mentioned on his Wikipedia page. I've translated it into Czech on Google and none of the words match.
