This book is the culmination of an inspiring and ambitious effort. Dewdney did a commendable job recreating the pictographs of this area, and spun a fair yarn in the process. This is niche, but if you're interested in this type of work, there is no finer place to start.

This is an extremely important book about a greatly underappreciated part of Canada's cultural heritage, the Indian Rock Paintings of Northern Ontario. It contains a list of all the known sites, photographs, and an interpretative scheme. Above all, this book highlights the need for work to restore and preserve these wonderful paintings of which all Canadians not just members of the First Nations should treasure.

Having fished in Northern Ontario Canada for years, and stopped on occasions to view the Agawa Rock Petroglyphs near Wawa, Ontario I was interested to learn more about them. Their history and meanings. I thought I would find these things in this book. Not so. This book has to do with identifying the locations where they might be found, and the author listing those sites. This work was done in the late 1950’s to 1960. It does show some photos and drawings (transfers) of many of the petroglyphs found, but does not identify much of the meaning of them, or date them at all.

It’s my fault for not finding out more about this book’s content before reading it. Still, having flown into the Northern Ontario wilderness many times, I did appreciate reading about the author’s effort, and the scope of his travels to identify these sites.
