For the longest time I thought this book was about gargoyles, and it sat in the to-be-read pile for a long time, even though I am a fan of Nathalie Gray's books. And what a strange book this one was. The Shades are demons, trapped eons ago in an underworld by the gods to protect mortals from their bloodthirsty, lustful ways. The Shades are energy-feeding tricksters, coveting either pleasure or pain or both, and literally screwing someone to death.

So to have Our Paranormal Hero start out as a stone-cold statue of a Shade was a little odd.

And Our Heroine is a loner, lonely and beaten down by the men in her life. She's a cutter, with a criss-cross of scars on her arms to prove. Yet she finds the wherewithal to go traveling through Germany and hiking to solitary destinations that enable her to fall into an underground cavern and open the portal to the Shades. Gotta love her. Of course, her snatch is so awesome that Mr. Evil Shade falls in love and turns mortal and tries to destroy the brothers he's hung out with for millenia. That's some pussy.

Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed the writing and I enjoyed this book. It was a cheese-fest for PNR books.
