Help students in grades 4 and up become better readers and writers using multilevel instruction with Modifying the Four Blocks® for Upper Grades. This 240-page book includes instructions for modifying strategies to meet the needs of older students and age-appropriate activities for each of the four blocks! It also features tips for scheduling, model lessons, and reproducibles to make implementation easier. The book supports the Four-Blocks® Literacy Model.
Good general information and structure. I found some of the terms and specific approaches dated, but I believe the intention and purpose to be sound. As with any program, I'm not convinced following it exclusively and abandoning all others is a great idea. One size doesn't fit all, especially within the classroom, but there are many ideas from which to draw here.
I'm an ELA teacher in the upper grades and I think if you hit all four blocks consistently you've done a good job of organizing your class and will touch on many, if not all, the Common Core standards, especially as you supplement. Vocabulary standards match with Working with Words. If you add in the use of technology, the writing block can address your writing standards.
As with any program, pick out the good parts, supplement with your professional knowledge, and apply to your classroom. A student centered classroom means one specific plan won't work for all classrooms as all classrooms don't have the same students, but I found this to be a nice overarching theme for how I set up my instruction.
