Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

What a good way to brighten up a day by reading a Noddy story ... but this one begins by having the opposite effect as dark clouds loom over Toy Town.

And after Noddy has driven Tessie Bear and Bumpy Dog to the station where they are taking a train to have a day out, Noddy notices dark grey clouds hanging over the town.

In Toy Town Mr Jumbo has also noticed the horrible dark clouds and as it begins to pour with rain he and Clockwork Mouse wonder what is happening.

They very soon find out as the rain is washing away all the colurs from Toy Town; everything was turning a miserable grey colour.

Miss Pink Cat is very upset as she become Miss Grey Cat and her Red Gooseberry Surprise ice cream has become Grey Gooseberry Surprise. Miss Pink Cat is not happy and nor is Mr Plod whose uniform turns from blue to grey.

Meanwhile Tessie Bear and Bumpy Dog are having a wonderful time in the countryside where the sun is shining brightly and Tessie uses her coloured pencils to produce lovely pictures of the colourful flowers.

When the pair arrive back in Toy Town Noddy arrives to pick them up but Tessie cannot believe that all the colour of the town has gone. Noddy points out to her that it is the fault of the horrible grey cloud that hung over the town when she departed and that the rain has washed away all the lovely colours.

Tessie hasn't enough coloured pencils to colour everything back to normal but Noddy espies a rainbow and has a brilliant idea. Noddy grabs a bucket and heads for the airport and hires a grey aeroplane.

He and Tessie head for the rainbow and you can imagine what they do ... flying through the rainbow the colour comes back to the aeroplane and to Noddy so, using his bucket he gathers colours to take back to Toy Town.

And once there you can easily work out what they do ... they even try to colour Mr Jumbo but he points out that he is naturally grey! But the end of the story brings Toy Town back to colourful life and everybody is happy once more.

A lovely happy story!
