Everything I love in an adventure book rest in the pages of this classic piece. The book starts in Spain where a crime is committed and most of the main actors are introduced. The characters are then found in the Southern United States in a time when Native Americans were still considered savages, and the laws of the desert were harsh. There are noblemen, adventurers, herdsmen, vaqueroes, peasants, savages, criminals, coast guardsmen, trappers, hunters, and sailors. The plot is loaded with twists and turns. Some of the common themes include murder, vengeance, love, romance, greed, scheming, friendship, regret, family, God, and more. This book was a page-turner for me. I would recommend this book to people who like classics, adventure, historical fiction, and westerns.
