The first book on the art of the legendary pin-up artist, George Petty features rare images from Esquire centerfolds, pin-up calendars, and full-color ads, highlighted by a brilliant biographical text discussing the artist's life and work.
Historically the work is interesting but compared to Vargas and other practitioners of a similar style, I find Petty's skills to be decidedly lacking, especially technically. His models are oddly proportioned, particularly noticeable in the feet which are to short and thick in the ankle, and their bodies are often more Jessica Rabbit than human.
A very good overview of illustrator George Petty’s‘s life and work. His work was well known in the 1930s through the 1950s but has been mostly forgotten today. He was one of the premier image makers in our culture. At a time when sexy pictures were not generally available his paintings in Esquire magazine were beloved for their beauty and charm.
I have a weakness for pin-ups, and I adore the style of this artist. Took me a while to find a book, but definitely worth the price of admission. Recommended for anyone who enjoys classical pinup.
