This book works best when it is reviewing the life of R. Shimson Rafael Hirsch. The history surrounding his life and the development of his thought were very interesting. A third of the book is a review of Horeb. This part did not work as well. Rosenbloom's summary didn't really add much to my understanding of the material. A reader could skip this part.

I particularly liked the material surrounding the relationship between Heinreich Graetz and R. Hirsch. Their 19 hour a day study schedule clearly shows that we are speaking of a different era.
