This is a weekly devotional prayer book, I would say, for new mothers. I do feel this is a period which requires more nurturing and care for the mother’s health and well-being. It’s a difficult period too trying to adjust with the new changes and emotions.
I do feel this collection will be really helpful. The content is very relaxing and filled with amazing writing which provides enough understanding and grace.
Gift this book to a new mom. She will really appreciate it.
Thank you, Zeitgeist and the author, for the advance reading copy.
To start off, I am hopelessly biased since the author is none other than my amazing wife. So while I can't say a mean word about her book if I tried, it also means I have had a front-row seat to witness how she has lived out her motherhood journey with honesty, transparency, and in ways that have been helpful for many other mothers in her life. And her ability to process her journey with such eloquence gives the rest of us a glimpse into what mothers go through, and helps us learn how best to come alongside to support and encourage. So let me step aside and allow Ellie to do the rest of the talking. This story below is a personal and beautiful entry straight out of the devotional and gives you an idea of the piercing power of Ellie's writing:
"The morning of my daughter’s birth started out slowly…very slowly. We’d been at the hospital since the previous afternoon, but my dilation had ground to a halt at seven centimeters. As I silently prayed that something would change, a look of slight panic washed across my nurse’s face. “The baby’s in distress,” she said, and before I could ask any questions, I was wheeled to the operating room for an emergency C-section.
I felt robbed. I had spent nine months working hard to overcome my fear of childbirth, and I’d actually begun looking forward to pushing out this precious little one—but clearly that wouldn’t be happening.
Like me, so many mothers have grieved unplanned challenges as they welcomed their babies into the world. Maybe you had to be unconscious when your baby was born, groggily meeting them for the first time hours later. Or perhaps fear gripped you as your birth took a quick, even life-threatening, turn and you still relive each painstaking moment. Or, worst of all, maybe you had to bring your baby home without the sibling(s) they grew beside in your womb.
Any number of circumstances may leave us emotionally fragile and unable to fully enter into the joy of welcoming our babies—and that’s okay. God understands better than anyone that our experiences aren’t black-and-white, and He can handle even our most heart-wrenching questions.
Ask God to take your hand and help you walk through those difficult feelings, not around them. Processing our pain gives our hearts permission to embrace the “both-and” of our experience. We can recognize that many things can be true at once. Grief can coexist with gratitude for the medical interventions that made our births possible. Loneliness can coexist with comfort from loved ones who showed up for us when others couldn’t. Praying, journaling, or talking to a trusted confidante can help us untangle these emotions, honor them as valid, and walk toward healing."
Incredibly life giving! As I am writing this, it is 2 AM and I am rocking my sweet baby in my arms - I think that sums up what this book is about. A 52-week devotional (but I read it in one!) designed for new moms, this book will surely bless you. I felt truth wash over me as I read Scripture and encouragements from someone who is a little farther along in my journey than I am.
Thank you, Ellie, for this precious gift and for pointing me to Jesus.
A few favorite quotes…
“This season of life will contain both joy and exhaustion, both deep meaning and new levels of stress. The good news is that Jesus is equally real and tangible in each of those circumstances.”
“He created your arms to be your baby's favorite place to rest, your face to elicit their biggest smiles, your voice to soothe them like no one else's can.”
“When you feel anxious about the future, remember this: God has so much goodness planned for you and your baby, and there is so much to look forward to.”
I have enjoyed looking through this sweet book and even shared a devotional with my young moms group which I mentor. They really enjoyed it and asked for the details on how to buy the book. It’s been a while since I had new babies, but the feelings of fear and anxiety can easily be remembered when you talk to a new mom about their struggles. Encouraging moms to turn to God is the best advice to give, and that never changes, no matter what phase of motherhood one is in. This would be a great present as it’s short and easy to read in a busy season.
My husband bought me this book after the birth of our first child and it was such an incredible support to me! I read them to my son while he was breastfeeding and called it our “Bible study” time together! I’d even grab his hand for the quick prayer at the end of each devotion! I looked forward to each devotion, so much so that I often did more than 1/week and finished in a little over 3 months. I’m going to start it again right away because each devotion has new meaning in whatever phase of motherhood you find yourself in. This book was validating and made me feel seen in the lonely, exhausted moments of being a new mom! Can’t recommend this book enough. I’ve already bought another one for a close friend having her first baby in a few months and will continue to gift it to all my friends as they become moms!
Blessings, New Mom is one of those books I'll come back to again and again. I'm not a new mom, but even as a mom of teens and young adults, I found Ellie's words so applicable to all stages of motherhood. "You were chosen and designed to be just the mom your baby (child/teenager/young adult leaving the nest) would need". Motherhood is full of things to worry and stress about, but Ellie leads us to take those worries, etc and entrust our babies, ourselves, our families to God who made us, understands us, and equips us for mothering. I will be keeping this book nearby for myself, and also recommending and passing it on to the moms in my life.
As with so much of her work, Ellie writes in such a way that is both so full of empathy and yet so full of hope. Through her short yet powerful devotionals, she is able to see into your experience, hold you closely, and cheer you on towards the One who is our ultimate hope. You can sense her heart and her deep compassion with every word she writes. I will be buying this for all the new moms in my life, and still resonate deeply with all of its themes and encouragements even though I am a few years into motherhood. This book is such a powerful resource and support for these intense months that can be so challenging. Ellie reminds us with great comfort that we are not alone on this journey.
I’m very excited to get into this book with my 2nd child and I’m so thankful my pregnancy coincided with its release! I’ve been looking for ways to be more mindful and intentional with my children so this will be a perfect start! So very glad to see Ellie diving deeper into the book world! I’ve been following her writing for a while now and I love how I can always relate, even though our lives aren’t the same. Looking forward to more, Ellie! ❤️
Ellie's writing is like a warm hug from a good friend who knows exactly what you are going through as a new mom. She meets you where you are with love, encouragement, and grace. This is a beautiful book to gift to new moms, or for yourself. You will feel lifted up, supported, and hopeful on this journey of motherhood that so many of us share!
This book is perfect for a new mom! The devotions are weekly so not overwhelming, and the space to write prayers for your baby is just precious. I love that it is honest about the challenges of motherhood yet still rooted in biblical truth. Highly recommend this book!
An honest, comforting, inspiring, and relatable companion for the rollercoaster that is the first year of new motherhood. The book truly lives up to its title: it is a blessing for the new mom that reads it!
I have loved this devotion as a new, first time, mom. It was gifted to me, and I would feel comfortable gifting to any “new” mother, whether it was her first baby or her fifth. The devotions are biblical, God centered, and relatable to the intricacies of being a new mom. There are several pages reserved for writing prayers for your baby, which I have thoroughly enjoyed and otherwise wouldn’t have written down on paper. This devotion is intended to be completed weekly over the course of a year with 52 total devotions, but I opted to read them daily.
