If a company employee sees a book with a title, “Not Your Job,” they may think, ‘Finally! Something I can use to get out of my boss’ quiet hiring strategy!’ But that’s not what this book is about. And, actually, “Not Your Job: Discover the Surprising Way to Save Time, Avoid Burnout and Do What you Love Forever” by Pierce Brantley is a book specifically written for entrepreneurs, business owners, and business managers. This book tackles the issue of such people taking on more work than they should, losing valuable time they should be spending on more important tasks, and suffering burnout from stretching themselves too thin. This book gives a solution to all that, by offering advice about delegating tasks to employees and making sure they actually do the job they have been entrusted with.

I do not have any experience as a manager, but I am the “owner” of my own home-based business. I have had the experience of delegating tasks to other people who claimed to be the right person for the job. Sadly, there were cases in which they were not, and there were either delays because of this or the final product was not as good as it should have been. If you’re going to delegate tasks to individuals, you have to make sure they are the right person for the job. And not only must you ensure they are the right person for the job, but you must also ensure they will actually do the same kind of work you would do yourself.

How? Read this book and Pierce Brantley will tell you.

At the beginning of the book, Brantley stresses just why it is so important for bosses and managers to delegate tasks in order to avoid burnout. Not only does he stress why it’s important, but he also points out how all the micromanaging that bosses and managers end up doing eats into their time and holds up everything else the bosses and managers are supposed to be doing instead.

The solution is to not only delegate the tasks to the right employee but to make sure that the employee completes the task by the deadline and does as good as or much better than a job the manager or boss would do.

In order to achieve that goal, it all goes back to the very beginning, during the employee’s onboarding process. The manager should take the time to really get to know their employee and their personality style which would affect how they work and interact in the long term. They should also make sure they have made it very clear to their new employee the company’s history, that they have outlined the company’s vision, and defined specifically what is expected of their role in the company. He also stresses how important it is to share company language (such as specific terms related to the company’s team members) and create sound company culture.

One important part of the beginning of the book which I found helpful was the author’s discussion about discerning what is a more valuable use of our time. This is especially true when it comes to delegating tasks to employees. Know what is valuable to an employee’s role in the company and what would be a valuable use of their time when delegating to them a task. “Delegation is about reestablishing why we work based on what is most valuable for us to do. By establishing what is most valuable for our time, we can freely and responsibly give work to others, so we get more leverage from our day. Time will recover itself if we focus our time on what is most valuable.” (Pg. 43)

The author shares a groundbreaking new strategy for delegating tasks. Each level, or “floor,” as he calls it, is defined and explained in lengthy detail. It may at first seem to be a tedious and time-consuming process, but by following this strategy, it does seem that it can produce a balanced and positive workplace where everybody is on the same page (more or less).

There are many parts of the book where the author shares templates for business managers to use, as well as links where they can download free templates for personal use.

The author spends the last part of the book sharing his insights on long-term management success, which definitely provided a lot of food for thought. I especially liked this particular form of advice: “Remind people of how their work is part of the greater good your business is doing in the world. People will continue to do good work if you do.” (Pg. 235)

“Not Your Job” is a great reminder to business owners and managers that it’s time to stop carrying the bulk of the workload that really isn’t “their” job and delegate tasks to employees they know they can count on because of adequate training and clear communication of just what is expected. It’s the kind of book that will help managers to see just how important it is to put a stop to all the micromanaging of employees who aren’t up to the task and instead build a better working relationship with the employees they value and trust to do things right in order to put their time where it should go.

I'm not an entrepreneur, but am in a management position and found most of the themes in the book applicable to the business I work in (advertising) and the type of leader I aspire to be.

I found the language and writing easy to digest and appreciated the samples provided that helped to explain the concepts. I also liked how information was broken out in short, succinct sections.

There were a lot of great takeaways from this book, but the ones I will use the most in my role will come from the onboarding/training sections.

I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. Thoughts are my own.

Book Review of Canaries Are Among Us

Review:
Canaries Are Among Us, written by Kayla Taylor, is an excellent resource. I gave the book a 5 out of 5 stars rating.
Hannah, Kayla Taylor's daughter's brain wiring is a little different than others making learning some subjects easier. She was diagnosed with several conditions: limited short-term memory, situational anxiety, and developmental coordination disorder, causing her problems with learning in a school environment. Seeing two good doctors gave Hannah the tools she needed to succeed at school. Her parents had to fight for their daughter to be heard and treated in a way that would maximize her ability to learn while minimizing her stress, teaching her how to handle stress and change. Hannah made considerable progress at the end of third grade. Changing schools to attend a Jewish school due to her situation and learning disability; she flourished there despite her disability.
However, she would not know her diagnosis had it not been for the bullying incident of Daniela and Lauren, which happened at the school she attended, Global Citizens Academy. The two girls targeted Hannah from preschool. She feels hurt more easily and cannot always express herself as another child would, so you could ascertain her issues, and it finally had to be dealt with when Hannah no longer wanted to go to school.

I loved this story.
It opened my eyes to a side of the school that I -a substitute teacher- witnessed but was not involved in dealing with the situation. The author showed her frustration at an administration refusing or fearing to see. Fighting the school for better treatment never entered her mind until she did have to do it before moving her daughter to a better school. The result -is her daughter moving to a school that appears far better for her condition.
But her condition should not have been a deterrent to Hannah being treated with concern and understanding so that her fears were validated and her situation handled correctly.
Seeing that Hannah needed help, Kayla took to reading up on her condition and felt that Hannah should see a doctor. This doctor then gave Kayla an answer; a name for what was wrong with her daughter and a plan of action to allow her daughter to attend school and be normal for her.
I think she described it perfectly and gave more resources for parents of these children with the same issues to read. Kayla advocates for her daughter and other parents in the same situation.
I highly recommend this read for all parents of children who are neurodiverse.

The art of delegating - and many more useful tips!

Texas author Pierce Brantley is a motivational leader and businessman who shares his sound advice in his books - CREATING HEROES, CALLING, POWER LOVE SOUND MIND and now NOT YOUR JOB. This book is written for the entrepreneur who has already established their business, but for whom the business is taking up more of their time than it needs to, for whom the business is growing beyond their own capacity. The book is broken into chapters/ topics, and there is a short summary of each topic at the very beginning of the book. So, the reader can read through the topics and go straight to the chapter that interests them the most. The writing style is straightforward and direct; it feels like the author is talking to the reader as one would a colleague or a peer. A lot of interesting management concepts are covered in this book. I'd recommend this book if the topic is interesting or useful for you.

Burnout has been an issue for myself and close friends on and off in our careers. We just kind of figured it was bound to happen and we had to push through. However, “Not your Job” offered different but great insight and advice for finding purpose in our work lives. I liked how this was not all rainbows and butterflies or a “push yourself” kind of book. This was upfront real support you would hear from a good friend that reminds you there are good days and bad days but finding purpose or your focus in your work can help you get past the bad days. 14 chapters that focus on every single factor of work life, business life, managing time and tasks, etc. A good reminder that finding focus, delegation, and management of time and tasks can really help and that not everything is your job.

“Not Your Job” by the successful businessman and devout Christian, Pierce Brantley is a useful resource for new and experienced business owners alike. It offers advice on how to delegate, how to create manageable tasks, how to effectively teach new employees how to do their new job to the best of their abilities, and much more. One of my favorite chapters is the one called “The Elevator Effect.” This eye-opening chapter teaches us the vital importance of getting work done WHILE you direct it. In other words, it is not about handing it over blindly to others, trusting them to do a good job. This runs counter to the advice of many business books, but it makes total sense! Overall, an excellent book.

Not Your Job by Pierce Brantley is a kind of shortcut for entrepreneurs. As per its title, it offers a surprising way to save time, to avoid burnout, and to do what is loved forever. I think the most innovative and valuable thing about this book is the new method to delegation, which definitely avoids wasting time and substantially improves any type of business.
I won't give spoilers about it, but this approach offers effective, efficient, useful and easy-to-apply delegation strategies. So much so that I wondered: how did I not think of it before?
Without a doubt, I recommend this reading to all types of entrepreneurs and leaders of any level: they will be able to get valuable lessons from it.

Pierce Brantley is the author of "Not Your Job: Discover the surprising way to save time, avoid burnout, and do what you love forever." In this book, the author proposes us to think about why companies / small businesses do not prosper. For Pierce, the answer is simple; owners don't figure out how to take advantage of other people's time and talents.

I really liked the approach of this book, since what the author proposes is a new perspective, or at least it is for me. In addition, if owners apply this method that promotes innovation in an organic way, with little or no effort, they will be able to see the results quickly.

avoid burnout and put your mind at ease

Not Your Job is a guide that was especially useful for me, as I struggle with trying to handle too much on my own. With this guide, readers will learn how to delegate tasks to others and allow themselves to have their mind at ease with knowing that the responsibilities are shared and can be handled by others as well. If you are looking for purpose and a way to find fulfillment in your work, this is a great book to recommend. Burnout is so real in the workplace and can be easily avoided if you put your mind in the right place and set your plan to focus on allowing others to take the lead on occasion.
